I hope this is allowed here.. =O I'm looking for a little help. I would like to commission someone to help me design and create a steampunk outfit with a little Scottish flare to wear with a partial fursuit (Which is a mask, shoulder length paws, feet, and a tail). I would need the outfit by the middle or March for a convention and have no trouble sketching up a rough idea of what I'm looking for if a text description isn't good enough ( see under cut for the description).
You would be working with large sizes, such as XL shirt sizes and about a 48" waist and will need to be able to accommodate the costume I will wear with the clothes (since there are shoulder length paws I'd need sleeves that are not full length, ect.)
( These are my ideas. )
I am editing a response here because I had so many comments and currently don't have the time to reply to each one individually. I will break this down into topics.
Goggles: I prefer to wear the goggles around my neck because I will be wearing a full face mask who's under-structure would be squeezed in an unnatural way because it is made of foam and not flesh and bone like our own heads. I have seen goggles worn on fursuits before but they generally have the straps let all the way out and are pinned in some way to the mask to hold them in place, from what I have seen. As this is not really the look I am going for, I prefer to hang them around the neck when not in use.
Kilt : The reason I wanted slacks with my kilt is because I will not have full legs on this costume, only feet. I understand that it might be historically inaccurate but for the sake of not showing my human legs. Of course I would always wear the socks as stated and add some fur to them, just enough to cover my exposed legs. I apologize for all who were offended by the suggestion, I was just trying to make this costume work with the outfit. As I said, this idea is very much up to artistic interpretation and I have no trouble changing the concept or idea if the costume maker has a better idea than what I have presented.
Location: Swainsboro Georgia, about 3 hours from Atlanta, 1 hour and 45mins from Augusta, and about the same distance from Savannah Georgia.

I just found out that my significant other and I are going to get to attend The Steampunk World's Fair in Jersey this May. And although we've been talking about and lusting over steampunk costumes for a few years now, we have never actually taken the big plunge. But since we're now committed to this event, the pressure is on to get at least a basic outfit together!
Now, the rub is that neither of us knows a thing about sewing, so we'll be buying our costume pieces and making some small personalizations that are within our limited means. Basically, we'd love to support freelance costumers who do commission work. Is there a "recommended" list somewhere, or some trusted costumers you could point us to? We'd love some personal recommendations to help us get the ball rolling!

So I've decided to hold a Pirate celebration on Sept 19, giving me eight months to prepare. I may be sewing all of my friend's clothing, and I was wondering if everybody here just kind of figured it out, or used patterns, or what? I want to make myself a Victorian/Steamy-esque dress (which I will then trail the bottom through some mud, make it sort of raggedy, and be a pirate), and my friends will probably need some sort of bloomers (probably most of us will be lower-class, while a few may use some of my lolita pieces and go as upper class pirates). Do you guys think that I, with minimum sewing experience (a few pillows and a basic shirt) but a lot of enthusiasm and dedication, could do in the next eight months? Also, what material do you all recommend for the cotton pieces?
Sorry to bother, since this may be a tad off topic, but I was hoping some of you guys would have experience sewing the Victorian pretty things.

Greetings all,
I recently made a c1908 dress for a party and while doing so I went hunting through my reference files again and came across a rather amusing image. I have a collection of Girl's Own annuals from 1906-1911 and they contain helpful hints on what to wear and what not to.
This image if from the article detailing what to wear when motoring:
The text reads: "Some women fancy themselves with goggles--"
Apart from the humour arising from the goggle issue we too face there are also some nice little fashion ideas that may be pulled from all the figures in the image. If there is interest I am happy to scan the full article as well as any others of interest (such as how to select and wear a corset and how to knit a motoring coat).

If you find yourself at the crossroads of insomnia and insanity, this is the place to channel those demons that keep you sleepless. Vivid pictures, poetry, ruminations, and confessions from the nether hours between dusk and dawn. Originally formed to celebrate the city at night, there's a strong urban theme.
Dedicated to promoting global sustainability, this community offers a forum for discussing current environmental news, research, and issues with tips on how to make positive, pro-active changes to reduce carbon impact. You'll also find information on how to get involved in eco-activism and learn about events near you (i.e., act local; think global). Offering a wealth of data on earth-friendly products and practices, you'll be inspired to don an organic bamboo cape and save the planet.
Self-described as "a little community with a lot of rage," you can soak up impassioned vibes and read blistering exposes detailing sexist attitudes in the news, pop culture, and science! A must-join community if you are, or love, a feminist. (NB: the topic of whether a "man" can be a feminist is outside the scope of this spotlight, but will probably wind up on the Writer's Block.)
Dear Fellow Steamers,
I hope you are all doing marvelously well as it has been a while since I posted on this community, but rest assured I read all the posts (I learned about "The World Sky Race", I saw someone make a beautiful replica Clank from "Girl Genius", I learned about the Steampunk World Fair going on in NJ, and so much more so keep up the great posts!).
Wanted to know if there was anyone here, or someone I could be recommended to, who could help me. I am currently looking on the market for a full deck of victorian playing cards (simply ones, no fluff, like cards you would see at a pub). Now I did some digging and this particular item seems to be extremely hard to come by (the few I found cost far too much then I would have been willing to pay...or anyone in their right mind would be willing to pay).
With this being said I am looking for prop victorian playing cards and/or someone who has the ability to make such a prop for me.
In exchange I can either pay, though piece might be low from me as I am not fabulously weathly at the moment, or, prefably, we could do a trade.
I'm an artist by nature and I would be willing to do a full commission of choice: character (or characters as long aes it doesn't go over three), fully cged with background, in exchange for the deck.
If someone is interested in taking on this challenge or knows someone who would, I would be very appreciative and would love to discuss in further detail. I can be reached at:
kdemsko@gamil.com
Also, in the future, I will be looking for a steampunk inventor collabator to help construct trickets, weapons, toys, and more so, same as above, if you or someone you know could possibly do the job, please feel free to email me at the above address (has anyone ever made tin wide up toys? I am VERY MUCH looking for someone who can!)
Lastly, thanks to the very kind patrons of this community, I have been able to take some freelance work and it has been coming along quiet well (you guys know who you are and I couldn't be more thankful. I will be posting the end results of those commissions here very soon!). However, as this group of commissions comes to a close, I would like to open back up a new batch of commission work. If you or anyone you know would be interested in having an art commission done by yours truly, please feel free to email me at the address above.
A few samples of my work can be found here (or if you rather wait till I post my first batch of steampunk commissions to see some steampunk art goodness, by all means please wait, I will have those up hopefully in the next few days or so :)

February 5, 2010 at DNA Lounge in San Francisco! Hope to see all of you there!

Hello again Bay Area Steamers,
I wanted to give the confirmed schedule for the "Feast of Norton" to commemorate the 130th anniversary of the death of Emperor Norton.
The plan is to meet at the Cable Car Turn around at Powell at 1 pm on Saturday the 9th.
(Bart and Muni station)
We'll wait around for just a little bit for folks to show up and then hope on the Cable Car (we may decide to head up the street to grab it with out waiting in line, that's to be decided once we're there) Cable Car is $5 one way.
We'll disembark at the Cable Car Museum at Mason and Washington. We can either have lunch first or Museum first. We'll be dining at the Gallery Cafe across the street from the museum. Also, the Museum is free.
After that, a brief walk down to Grant to where Norton died to say a few words.
If anyone is game, maybe head to the Musee Mecanique or the carousel or just anywhere really. This part is up in the air. Just want to have a relaxed day out with some fantastic people, if any one has any additional ideas...
And as always, if you can make it in your steam fineries please do, if not, just bring your awesomeselves.
If you can make it that would be great.

So I have what should be the perfect line-up of circumstances: I'm studying organic chemistry and am forced (gasp!) to wear goggles on a weekly basis. The trouble is, the chemistry lab goggles I can find are either simply cheap and banal, or sleek and modern. I can't find a lovely anachronistic pair in the lot - not that such goggles don't exist, but when I click links attached to pictures of pretty goggles, they don't appear to be rated for chemical splash protection.
Anyone have a recommendation for a pair that rates, or suggestions for ways to alter and mutate a pair of the ugly ones? If you're wondering what kinds of things I have to work with, here's an example of the selection available.
EDIT: I'm aware of safety concerns; that's why I came here asking for suggestions in case someone had either found a nicer-looking pair of safety rated goggles or decorated a pair of existing goggles. I can find all the pretty goggles I like that aren't rated for splash protection, but the whole reason I'm wearing goggles is to protect me from lab chemicals - of course I wouldn't consider wearing a pair that wasn't rated for the lab environment or was likely to fall apart!
Thank you all for the concerns you've expressed, even if I haven't found them terribly useful. I realize not everyone is as serious about putting safety first as I tend to assume people should be; we all know someone who's done something idiotic in the lab, it seems.

Yesterday morning I was reading "Girl Genius". I then looked around at the mountain of old parts I have around and I decided I absolutely needed a CLANK!

I also don't usually do cute but I couldn't help it, he's too cute for me to sell.

But for those of you who do the Wild West variety of steampunk, there is an online game out there now called (creatively enough) The West.
As I said, it's not a steampunk game, but maybe some of the things within the game might give you an idea for your outfits...or "persona"...if you're the kind who goes into like that.

First half hour of this new show has two very steampunk weapons and a steampunk watch to decode a locking mechanism to a special room. Looks kind of cool so far. Don't have pictures yet have to go digging for them still.
I come to ye humbly, begging for aide. I have recently found myself in a design rut when it comes to my living space. All the creative juices have gone to new clothes that come out this Spring (yay) and now I am left wondering what to do with my living/ dining room.
I need inspiration, links to items that can be purchased, and just general ideas and opinions from you creative folks.
Pics of the currently Baliwood/ New Orleans Decorated space behind this cut...( Read more... )
Any and all feedback is sincerely appreciated. We need to replace our couch, and we are getting rid of our armoire in favor of a flat screen (to be mounted above where the couch now is) for more floor space.
Also need to get rid of the coffee table in lieu for something more easily movable or just different so that it won't interfere with wii play (gotta have priorities).
I should add the current problems with the space you see above:

We need a dining area with a table and seating for four
We would like to increase our seating in the living area. Currently our couch seats three or two adults, two kids. Perfect for us but not when company comes over.
Where the couch is now, a tv needs to go and something underneath it for the containment of the aforementioned wii, dvd player, dvd's, etc.
A way to disguise or incorporate the new to-be-purchased flatscreen tv.
